Dr.R.Berni Canani has developed a multidisciplinary research team “The GIANT of NAPLES” dedicated to the investigation of pediatric gastrointestinal diseases, pediatric allergy and malnutrition with the aim of providing the best care for the patients.

The investigation is focused on the identification of best strategies for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of pediatric gastrointestinal conditions, pediatric allergic disorders, and malnutrition.
A bench to bedside approach is used to investigate the pathophysiological basis of pediatric diseases including animal models of several pediatric diseases; cell culture of human enterocytes, immune cells, keratinocytes, adipocytes; organoids; Ussing chambers; artificial gut system; artificial gut microbiome system (SHIME); organ culture; genetic and epigenetics biomarkers; gut microbiome structure and function analysis.
His studies on human nutrition, gut microbiome, and mucosal immunology have already been translated into novel concepts and lead to a paradigm shift in the pathogenesis and treatment of food-induced diseases and of other pediatric allergic and gastrointestinal diseases.
The research activities are sponsored by the main Italian and EU Institutions and by the major private Companies in the field of pediatrics and human nutrition.
Dr. Berni Canani has extensive local and international academic research collaborations in Europe, Africa, Asia, and America.
He is author of more than 500 papers on the most relevant scientific journals. His publications are widely quoted (collectively more than >37.000 citations as May 2024). H-index Google Scholar 85. Total impact factor score: >5500.
He has obtained several scientific prizes for the research activity.
He has received >450 personal invitations to speak at international conferences, most of these as a Keynote or Plenary speaker.
From 2013 he is enclosed in the list of Top 250 Italian Scientists of VIA-Academy.
In 2019 he has been enclosed in the Plos Biology list of the most influent international scientists in the world.
